A Pennington Gap man was listed in critical condition at Holston Valley Medical Center Thursday morning after being struck by a CSX Railroad train late Wednesday.
A CSX spokeswoman said the accident involved only a switcher engine from a local coal yard.
Pennington Gap Police Chief Mike Nunley said Jessie Dale Clark, 39, 510 Elpis St., was struck by the engine at approximately 11:30 p.m. at a rail crossing on North Kentucky Street, just a few hundred yards from the Route 421 intersection at Leeman Field.
The chief said the train engineer reported that he was making his regular night run when he saw something lying on the tracks between the rails. When he realized it was a person, the engineer executed an emergency stop, but the engine was unable to stop before striking Clark.
Nunley said the engineer reported that the individual never sat up or otherwise moved.
The chief said when he arrived on the scene, Clark was still underneath the train engine. Within minutes, the Pennington Gap Rescue Squad, fire department, Liberty Ambulance Service, Virginia State Police, Lee County Sheriff's Department and other rescue personnel began arriving on the scene.
Clark was removed from under the train and transported by ambulance to Lee Regional Medical Center and eventually on to Holston Valley. Stormy weather prevented Clark from being flown to Kingsport, said Nunley.
Clark suffered from a head injury, broken legs and possible internal injuries, said the chief.
Nunley said alcohol may have played a role in the accident, as Clark smelled of an alcoholic beverage and a broken beer bottle was found at the scene.
The Pennington Gap Police Department is still investigating the incident, he said. Nunley thanked all the other police agencies and rescue personnel for their assistance.
LPDFTBL..I understand that you're just trying to be informative to the other members on the board who may not get to read the news on Yahoo! every day. Do you think you could you please use just ONE post/thread and maybe label it "Today's News" Or something jazzy like that? And just add all the stories you want to under that one post?
No offense really, I just hate having to always go to page two to avoid all the headlines.
I hadn't really posted anything news related in some time. And sometimes it's hard to post it all under one topic, as my time is limited and i post worthy items when i can. Esp. when i post local and national news events, and some regional and national sports news.
If only half those who posted on here read the newspaper or watched the news. They may all realize why their parents are having a hard time making ends meet. And some may realize what is going on around them, that they never think about or know about. Just like the stabbing over a domestic problem in BSG. How common is that becoming? A guy in Coeburn just got run over by his g/f a few months ago. But we have more importan issues.
Like what will the new Super Wal-Mart bring in. Or what new rap song is hot or whatever. But ya know. It tells me a lot that most of young folks are out of clue with what is actually going on. As long as mom and dad are paying the bills and their not. They don't care. Well maybe not till that draft card number gets pulled. Better learn to look well ahead.
But i'll try to do better. I do know that who has the best new rap song is more important, or what the new Super Wal Mart will have, or has anyone been to the new work out place in Coeburn, is more important, than the US possibly being in Iraq 4 more years.
Even though i don't know where they are gonna get troops. Since were fighting two wars on two fronts and it seems losing a lot.
But no offense taken i will work on it and i'll try to post to the convience of others when i can.

I like when one event has it's own post, I have my settings to show more topics on the first page. If there is a particular thing to talk to about or respond to then you can that way. Say there are 2 or 3 things sparking reactions/comments, then I don't want to have to cypher through all the comments on the other topics I am not interested in. Cause I for one don't really give a crap about the hottest rap song.
